THE NIGHT OF IDEAS
Celebrating the stream of ideas between countries, cultures, topics and generations
Let me share with you the details of this yearly international event that will take place in January 26th. It is called “La Nuit des Idées”:
“The Night of Ideas in 2018 will focus on the theme : ‘Power to the imagination’. Guests from diverse backgrounds – intellectuals, researchers, artists – will gather to discuss the theme all across the five continents, from Dakar to Los Angeles, not to mention Brussels, Buenos Aires, Kathmandu, Marseille and Paris…
Every year, the Night of Ideas gives the opportunity to discover the latest discoveries in knowledge and arts, to listen to the ones who contribute to bring more ideas to their field, and to take part in the discussion about the main issues of our times. And since ideas know no frontier, projects of any type are welcomed (conference, theatre play, performance, screening, concerts, …), and all places – whether prestigious or unexpected – are called to join the party and host oiginal projects reflecting their own interpretation of the suggested theme. As time goes by, glimpses from the Night of Ideas will echo through social media and make the Night of Ideas a global event.
“Power of imagination’ was the phrase sprayed by 1968 demonstrators on Parisian walls. Half a century later, how is yearning for utopia expressed? What is the meaning of this call to be creative in all fields – technology, economy, science or urbanism? How do societies deal with the un-thinkable- ice cap melting, human gene sequencing, artifical intelligence? Can the works of imagination (art, literature, science-fiction) help us understand better our world today? Bridging from poetry to political science, from science to art, from literature to visual arts, how can the power of the imagination be assessed and renewed ?
At the invitation of French Institute, the Night of Ideas was first hosted on January 26th, 2017, in places of culture and knowledge, both in France and in 51 countries. The theme of the night was ‘A world in common’: universities, high schools, museums art centers, cultural centers, medias, libraries, associations and hospitals have welcomed people to meet thousands of guests with diverse backgrounds. From Tokyo to Los Angeles, from Stockholm to Johannesburg, 180000 people gathered to celebrate ideas.
